Reflection: Evolving Roles and AI in Project Management

Reading: “Project Management Trends and New Challenges 2020+” by McGrath & Kostalova (2020).

This article discusses how AI and digitization are transforming project management, and what excited me the most was its focus on the evolution of project management roles. It emphasizes that as AI takes over data-heavy tasks, the role of project managers will shift toward strategic oversight, stakeholder management, and fostering innovation. AI isn’t just a tool for automation—it’s reshaping what it means to lead a project team.

The article highlights how hybrid models are becoming the norm, combining traditional project management methods with Agile frameworks to meet the demands of modern businesses. But beyond methodology, what really caught my attention was the emphasis on PMOs (Project Management Offices) transforming into Centers of Excellence. The integration of AI allows PMOs to provide not just operational support but also strategic insights, guiding the organization at a higher level.

This resonates with my experience conducting workshops—managers are eager to understand how their roles will evolve in response to AI. This reading has energized me, and I can’t wait to discuss these shifts with participants. The idea that AI can enhance—not replace—project managers’ roles aligns with what I’ve been preaching: AI frees people from routine tasks so they can focus on what matters most—strategic decision-making.
